EOK offers bridging courses for DSE students to IGCSE stream...

Yonnie Ma, used to study at St. Paul's College, pursues IGCSE and GCE studies at EOK as a full-time student.

EOK has been like a shelter to me. One of the main reasons why I came to EOK is that studying in local school gave me a lot of pressure. As my grades had continued to drop, I decided to listen to Dr Ma’s advice and study full time in EOK. Due to the intensive and engaging program here, I got great results in IGCSE and A levels. The teachers are supportive and patient. When I lose hope in my studies, they comfort and motivate me. I want to thank EOK for giving me encouragement.

Terrence Wong, used to study in HK local school and UK boarding school, transfers to EOK to pursue full-time IGCSE and GCE studies.

When I was in local school, I had zero confidence in my English ability. After coming to EOK, I began to build up my motivation to practice my reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. I learned many valuable exam strategies and sentence structures from the teachers who clarified all of my misconceptions. This made me realize that English is not as unapproachable as it seemed.

English Language

English as a First Language is never an "easy A" subject as students thought because it requires intensive training on a spectrum of technical skills to score at the top 10%. At EOK, intensive training is not merely about past paper drilling, but a systematic teaching method that scrutinizes each exam component thoroughly and designs a series of comprehensive learning lessons that targets the essential knowledge and skills. EOK teachers also identify the weaknesses and misconceptions of each student and personalize the learning plan accordingly. With such teaching method, EOK has succeeded in boosting students' grades from C or B to A and even A*.

There are different components covered in our IGCSE English course:

Reading

The course instills essential skills and knowledge in students, improving their ability to analyze literary texts and write personal responses as well as developing them to become successful writers who are both accurate and precise in their expression. Students learn to infer the writer's implicit meaning and integrate their points with empathic engagement.

Writing

Through learning a variety of text types, students learn how to develop their ideas fully and write lucidly with precision, in a way that helps them secure their score and outshine their peers. The course also teaches students how to critically evaluate the ideas of a passage and adapt their writing style with the intended audience in mind. Students are taught sophisticated vocabulary as well as complex sentence structures to achieve the desired purpose.

Coursework

For students who have to go through a coursework component, which is worth up to 50% of the overall grade, we give ad-hoc consultation sessions in assisting them in the content, accuracy and coherence of their work. We cover a wide range of writing formats such as narrative, descriptive, argumentative, empathic responses, speech and letter writing.

English Literature

English Literature is not just about reading books but a perceptive, critical understanding of the texts. EOK has a systematic teaching method that scrutinizes each exam component thoroughly and designs a series of comprehensive learning lessons that targets the essential knowledge and skills. EOK teachers also identify the weaknesses and misconceptions of each student and personalize the learning plan accordingly. With such teaching method, EOK has succeeded in boosting students' grades from C or B to A and even A*.

There are different components covered in our IGCSE English Literature course:

Unseen Poetry/Prose

The course instills essential skills and knowledge in students, improving their ability to recognize and appreciate the language effects created in a poem or prose. Students also learn to explore the texts beyond surface meaning to show deeper awareness of ideas and attitudes such that they can write their commentary with further insight, sensitivity and individuality.

Set Texts

Students are exposed to a wide variety of texts including Shakespeare, drama, selected poems and short stories throughout the course. The course is personalized to each student in terms of the particular set text they are required to read. To prepare for their closed-book exams, students are taught to selectively pick and recite the most relevant and precise quotes that target the exam questions. In addition to learning the themes and characterization of the texts, students also learn how to analyze the language effects and give insightful explanations.
